The diversity of his work is unrivalled in all respects and Telemann himself thus explained his success: I say: Who benefits most people does better then who writes for few; Now serves everyone what is composed in an easy manner: Therefore the best is to stick to this. |

Soon after August the Strong ascended the throne Dresden and Warsaw became centers of the European cultural life, where numerous famous composers and musicians worked. Both cities were an attraction for artists throughout Europe. Composers and musicians who worked at the court created their own style by introducing characteristics of different national styles as the french, italian or polish style in their works. The program is dedicated to this new „mixed style“. |

The first half of the program includes the Partitas for flute and violin, Suite for violoncello and the Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge for Harpsichord. These pieces were written during Bach’s time in Köthen and reveal his mastery understanding and potential of these four instruments. Finally in the second half, these solo instruments are brought together in his Musikalische Opfer. Bach incorporates the gallant style to impress Frederick the Great to whom the offering was dedicated. |

The title of this concert is taken from a poem by John Dryden. G. F. Handel set it to music in his „Ode for St Cecilia’s Day“. In the centre of this program stands the sonate by Handel for flute and b.c. b-minor. In this piece Handel uses all different styles and musical forms, espacially the italian style. This style is characterised by its expressivity and ist breathtaking virtousity. |
